D-tox January, Day 28: Green Goddess Smoothie from Gluten Free Life

Today T got to look at Venus through a telescope at the Chabot Space Center on his pre-school field trip. Very cool – and very adventurous for a pre-school thing. He already knows the order of the planets better than I do. Oh dear.

Today is also my sauerkraut ‘aha’ day. I’d kind of forgotten all about sauerkraut. A bit silly really, given that I’m half German and grew up eating the stuff whenever we could get a hold of some up in the North of England. When Heidi at Adventures of  a Gluten Free Mom suggested putting sauerkraut into a smoothie, I got curious. It seemed a bit weird at first, but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made, given that it is a good probiotic. Heidi recommended the ‘Bubbies’ brand of sauerkraut. I hadn’t seen it before, but when I went to WholeFoods this week, there it was staring right at me.

Tonight I had sauerkraut with the gravadlax that M made this week. It was scrumptious. Bubbies doesn’t taste quite like the stuff that I have grown up with, but it still tastes good. I googled ‘why sauerkraut is good for you’ and I came to learn on sauerkraut.com (yes, there really is such a website), that sauerkraut is really really – I mean REALLY – good for you. In short, it is an immune booster, a cancer fighter (we like that), a digestive aid and a flu fighter. Wow. Am I the only one who has been so slow on that particular uptake? Tomorrow, I’m going to try Heidi’s “You Won’t Guess What’s In Me” smoothie.

The other green smoothie that looks and sounds quite tantalizing, is the Green Goddess Smoothie posted by Jen over at Gluten Free Life today for day 28 of D-tox January. Jen, always a source of great information, has shared a couple of great tips today along with her yummy recipe. All of that, despite dealing with the flu. Jen – go eat some sauerkraut!     What will you do with your time when this series is over :) Does sauerkraut taste good? I’m a little bit afraid of it, but I love the benefits!

      Hi Maggie. That is SUCH a good question. What do you think about making this series into an e-book, with any proceeds going to a charitable cause? Sauerkraut is definitely an acquired taste, but I love Heidi’s idea of throwing it into a smoothie (still on my ‘to do’ list) and you should definitely give it a whirl. In Germany, it’s eaten warm a lot. I ate mine cold yesterday though… xo
